SHANE McGuirk came within a whisker of qualifying for the PDC World Championships at Alexandra Palace today as he fell at the final hurdle to Welshman David Davies.
The Arrow had battled his way through a field of 128 players to make it into the final two against Davies, with just one spot for Ally Pally up for grabs.
It was Davies who managed to take it as he beat Monaghan man McGuirk 7-4 in a high class final with some superb finishing.
Losing out after getting so close will have been a bitter pill for McGuirk, who nevertheless still has the chance to retain his WDF world title at Lakeside next month.
His bid to make it to the Ally Pally saw McGuirk beat the likes of fellow Irishman Dean Finn Forde, George Killington, Tommy Lishman, Steve Vine and Darryl Pilgrim on his way to the final.
He gave himself every chance of winning the decider, too, when he took a 4-3 lead with a break of throw in the seventh leg.
However a stunning 130 checkout from Davies in the next leg, as McGuirk look set to take a crucial 5-3 lead, turned the game back in his favour and he powered on from there.
Davies won the final three legs in just 41 darts to claim his spot at the PDC World Championships, with McGuirk having to settle for his spot at Lakeside instead.
