Rosney excels at Q School final stages

IRISH darts star Stephen Rosney has put himself in poll position to earn a professional PDC tour card after a brilliant first day for him in the final stages of Q School.

The Republic of Ireland captain sits fourth in the Order Of Merit table, with the top five gaining their cards following four days play on Sunday.

Only a last leg defeat in his quarter final clash with England's Scott Waites denied Rosney  of a chance to gain his tour card outright on the opening day, with the top two players on each of the four days also gaining their cards.

However the Offaly county player will still have been pleased with his opening day's work, that saw him win his first four games on the spin.

Rosney's run began with an impressive 6-2 victory over England's John Brown that was polished off with back-to-back 14 dart legs.

He then had to show some grit to come from 5-3 down in his next match to Ryan Furness to progress into the last 32 with a 6-5 victory.

That pitted Rosney up against veteran Mervyn King and he was again up to the task as he secured a 6-2 victory with a 94.29 average.

Rosney did his leg difference no harm in his last 16 clash with another Englishman, Sam Spivey, as he won that game 6-1 to set up his last eight clash with Waites.

The Irishman looked to be in rampant form yet again as he built up a 5-2 lead over Waites, but his experienced opponent then rattled off the last four legs to advance to the semi-finals.

It all meant Rosney finished the day as the fourth best player on the Q School Order of Merit.

Elsewhere, Carlow's Steve Lennon, who is looking to regain the tour card he just lost, sits 19th in the table after he picked up two wins today.

Monaghan's Shane McGuirk is the next best placed Irish player in 34th position, after he let a 5-2 lead slip against Griffin, who went on to win his tour card, to fall to a painful 6-5 defeat.
