Shield success is sweet for Kilkenny Youths

IT'S been a superb few weeks for Kilkenny darts, capped off by their youths team claiming the INDO Inter Counties shield title in Galway last weekend.

The success for the Kilkenny 1 team came just a week after their men's A team also claimed the INDO Inter Counties shield, while the Kilkenny ladies team made it all the way to the final in their event.

Kilkenny's James Brennan had a bird's eye view as it all unfolded, playing for the men's team in their shield success and managing the youths team to victory also.

Speaking to Darts In Ireland, James said: "It's been a great week  for Kilkenny darts. The women did fierce well to get to the final of the Inter Counties.

"For the men's team we didn't do our best on the Saturday, although we were in a very tough group, but we got it together on the Sunday and went on to win the shield.

"It was something similar for the youths as again we weren't at our best on the Saturday but played a lot,  lot better on the Sunday.

"It's a massive boost for our lads to win this, especially when there were 67 teams involved at the start."

James said he got an immense sense of pride out of watching the Kilkenny 1 youth team, made up of Shane Hogan, Eoin Roche, Ryan Phelan, Cillian Grace, Charlie Hearne, Blake Flynn and Finn O'Connor, battle their way through to victory.

After just missing out in the group stages to two very strong teams in Carlow and Cavan 1, the Kilkenny lads dusted themselves down the shield on Sunday and remained unbeaten all day.

Victories over teams from Kerry, Cork, Wicklow and Clare put them through to a final with tough Roscommon team on Sunday evening.

They were imperious in that final, winning all of the first three games to lift the shield.

It came after the Kilkenny 2 team had made it all the way to the semi-finals of the main championships, while the Kilkenny 3 team also made it out of their group on the Saturday before losing out in the last 32 to Wexford 2.

James said: "I've been playing for the county for the past 17 or 18 years and it is great to bring some young lads here and be successful.

"We are going to need them for the future to come on to the men's team, and the ladies team, so it's great to have them coming through."
