THE captain of Westmeath Men's B darts team has revealed his pride after they were crowned the 2025 INDO Inter Counties B Shield champions following victory over Louth in a nail biting final in Killarney.
There were emotional scenes as the Westmeath men won their first national darts title with a deserved 7-4 win over Louth.
The win capped off a brilliant weekend for Westmeath as they beat four other counties over the course of two days, on their way to picking up the trophy.
Darragh Mullen proved to to the hero of the hour for Westmeath as he won the crucial final game that got them over the line against Louth.
They had earlier survived a major scare in the Shield quarter final against Cavan, coming from 6-3 down to squeeze over the line 7-6, with Charlie O'Toole keeping his nerve to win that last set decider.
Westmeath also accounted for Carlow 7-5 in the semi final, as they remained unbeaten all through Sunday at the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney.
In the group stages on Saturday, Westmeath also beat Clare but failed to progress to the main cup knockout stages from a tough group that also contained strong teams from Donegal, Sligo and Roscommon.
They instead went into the Shield on Sunday and went all the way to winning it.
Speaking afterwards, an emotional Westmeath captain, Jason Matthews, from Mullingar, said winning the Inter Counties B Shield was his biggest achievement in darts.
Jason said: "It's unreal, I'm a long time in this game, up to 30 years, and that's a first All Ireland medal for me.
"I'm delighted for all the lads as well as they've worked hard all weekend and played a lot of games to get this.
"We didn't see ourselves winning something here, especially when you see all the bigger counties such as Cork, Limerick and Dublin, so to win the Shield is amazing for us. We are absolutely over the moon.
"We got a bit of luck in some of our games which were very close but thankfully they all went our way."
