Ireland through to quarter finals of PDC World Cup of Darts

THE Republic of Ireland pair of Willie O'Connor and Keane Barry made light work of Switzerland in the knockout stages of the PDC World Cup of Darts today to advance to the quarter finals.

The Irish duo, who survived a major scare in their group by only coming through on legs won against the darts after finishing level with Gibraltar and China, made no mistake today as they comfortably beat the Swiss 8-3.

The longer format certainly seemed to suit both O'Connor and Barry as they not only got out of the traps early against the Switzerland pair of Stefan Bellmont and Alex Fehlmann, but then maintained their advantage throughout.

After taking the opening two legs, the Irish pair stayed pretty much on top after that, with Barry landing a crucial 85 finish in the sixth leg for a 12-darter that maintained Ireland's two leg lead at 4-2.

It was a lead they never relinquished as three further legs on the spin saw they lead 7-2 in a race to eight.

They missed chances to finish the game off for good in the next leg and, with the nerves jangling, they struggled to get over the line in next too as Barry was left on double one.

However that proved to be no bother to the Meath man as he hit it with his second dart to see Ireland proceed into the last eight.

They will now return for the final day of action tomorrow, when they will face the winner of Northern Ireland's game with South Africa in their quarter final.

Should they win that, then England, who boast the two top ranked players in the world in Luke Humphries and Luke Littler, are their most likeliest semi-final opponents.
