LIMERICK darts star Michael Flynn was the best of the Irish at the PDC Players Championship 23 today as he enjoyed a superb run to the last 16.

Flynn showed his class as he won three games on the spin to win his board and some decent ranking money to boot too.

And he almost got his day off to the perfect start as he went seven darts into a nine-dart attempt in the final leg of his opening match with Darius Labanauskas.

Flynn had to settle for winning that leg in 11 darts to secure a crucial 6-5 win that set him on his way.

He followed it up with another last leg decider against Sweden's Jeffrey De Graaf, in a match in which Flynn had to hold his nerve to win the final two legs to advance.

That set him up for his board final against the number one seed, German's Martin Schindler, with Flynn averaging an impressive 97.45 to win 6-2.

It was only the brilliance of Ryan Joyce, who averaged an incredible 114.03 that halted Flynn in his track, as he defeated the Limerick man 6-3 in their last 16 clash.

The run will no doubt give Flynn great confidence as he aims to climb the PDC Challenge Tour table for the rest of this year.

He currently sits at No26 in the Challenge Tour Order of Merit, a position which earned him a call up to this week's Players Championships in Hildesheim, Germany.

Elsewhere, Derry's Daryl Gurney also won his board to advance to the last 16, where he was beaten by German Lukas Wenig.

Flynn's fellow Limerick man, Willie O'Connor, went out in the last 32 to Bradley Brooks, while Meath's Keane Barry - who made to the last 16 of PC22 yesterday - was beaten today in his second round clash by Dutchman Danny Noppert.

Next up for Michael Flynn will be the Winmau Challenge Tour 16 in Leicester in  two weeks time.
