Dean in the frame for Modus finals night

WATERFORD'S Dean Finn has put himself well in contention to qualify for finals night following a strong opening day for him at the Modus Super Series.

Competing in a tough Group C, the Republic of Ireland international won three of his five games to sit third in a group that the top two will qualify from.

Only a defeat in a last leg decider in his final game prevented Finn from being in outright second place in the group.

However he'll be more than satisfied with how his day went, given he lost his opening game to the runaway Group C leader David Davies.

A 4-1 defeat in that game could have knocked Finn's confidence, but instead he came roaring back to win his next three games on the spin.

His impressive run began with a 4-1 of his own over Sweden's Par Riihonen, and he soon followed that up with a 4-2 victory over Scott Bannerman of Wales.

The highlight of Finn's day came in his next game against England's Graham Jenkins.

With the game tied at 3-3, and Jenkins looking to win his fourth game in a row, Finn showed his class by taking out a 170 finish to win the match and draw level with Jenkins in the table.

He had a chance to overtake him in his final game of the day against Australia's Ky Smith.

However some missed doubles cost Finn the chance to close out that match, with Smith edging it 4-3, to leave the group incredibly tight with one more day of action to go.
