Grimes misses out on Modus finals spot despite late flurry

IRISH darts star Damien Grimes just missed out on a spot in finals night at the Modus Super Series despite winning his final two Group C games today.

The Louth man came into his final day of Group C action just two points off top spot and with high hopes of claiming one of the two qualification places.

However  a slow start to the day dented Grimes' chances as he eventually had to settle for fifth place, but still just two points off the top in an extremely tight group.

Victory over Johan Engstrom in his final game on the first day of Group C had put Grimes in a strong position in the group, but he was unable to repeat the trick in his opening match against the same opponent today as he fell to a 4-0 defeat.

He fell to another 4-0 loss to eventual Group C winner Jim McEwan, with the heavy nature of both defeats really hitting his leg difference and leaving Grimes with a mountain to climb.

Grimes needed to win his final three matches to stand any chance of progressing from the group, but he suffered another hammer blow in a 4-1 defeat to Dan Hands.

That was a result that would ultimately see Hands qualify from the group in second place, with Grimes forced to miss out.

He rallied with two impressive later performances, though, as he beat overnight group leader Terry Nash 4-3 to pick up his first win of the day.

Grimes wasn't finished there, however, as he put in his best display of the day in his final match, as he averaged 90.28 in a 4-2 victory over Richard McKee.

It meant Grimes finished Group C level on 10 points with Nash, but two points behind the two qualifiers, McEwan and Hands, on 12 points.
