THE Republic of Ireland Men's team have made a strong start to their WDF World Cup campaign, winning all but one of their Group 1 games on the first day of action today.
The Irish team showed some excellent form throughout the group stages, recording the second highest team average of the day.
They faced a tough start against the Netherlands in their very first match, with the Irish team, made up of captain Stephen Rosney, Dean Finn, Gerard McGlynn and Patrick Quinn coming from behind early on to push the Dutch team all the way.
The Irish team came from 7-4 down to string three wins on the trot to level the match up at 7-7 going into the closing stages.
However wins for Danny van Trijp and Alexander Merkz saw the Netherlands over the line with a 9-7 victory.
It was the only defeat that the Irish would taste, as they got themselves back on track with a comfortable 9-3 over Ukraine, as all four players picked up big wins.
They followed that up with a 9-0 win over Liechtenstein which put them back in contention to qualify from the group in a strong position.
The Ireland team cemented that with another impressive 9-3 win over Faroe Islands, in which they had three sub 16 dart legs in the opening five matches.
They completed their day with a stunning 9-1 win over Norway to secure second spot in the group behind Netherlands.
However their overall team average of 81.33 was only bettered on the day by Sweden, giving manager Chris Curran high hopes as they go into the knockout stages on Friday.
The Ireland men's players will be back in action tomorrow, however, in the singles event.
