Irish Ladies top World Cup group

THE Republic of Ireland Ladies team have begun the defence of their WDF World Cup title in sensational fashion by winning all their games and topping their group.

The team, under manager Kevin Devaney, showed just why they are one of the favourites to win the World Cup again after waltzing through Group 8, losing just four legs in the process.

They began their campaign with a stunning 9-2 win over Turkey, with all four players, Katie Sheldon, Robyn Byrne, Denise Cassidy and Aoife McCormack winning at least two games each.

They were in even better form in their second game against Lithuania, recording a 9-1 win that included superb back-to-back 15 dart legs from Cassidy and McCormack.

That set up a clash with New Zealand to decide who would win the group, with the Irish ladies in superb form again as they defeated the Kiwis 9-1 to ensure they would go into the knockout stages on Friday in a strong position.

It comes after Cassidy and McCormack came within a whisker of landing a medal in the Pairs competition when they fought their way through to the last eight, which included an impressive win over the Japanese duo of Mikuru Suzuki and Momoka Hayashi in the last 16.

That put them just one win away from securing a bronze medal at least, but they came up just short in their quarter final clash against the English pair of Laura Turner and Steph Clarke, who will now contest the final on Friday.
