O'Connor makes final of penultimate PDC Players Championship

THE Magpie Willie O'Connor was in flying form at PDC Players Championship 33 today as he fought his way through all the way to the final.

In the second last PC event of the year, the Limerick man once again displayed why he's in the top 20 in the Players Championship rankings as he won six games on the spin to make the decider.

It was only a defeat to Chris Dobey in that final that prevented O'Connor from winning another ranking PDC event outright.

He will have been pleased with his form today, though, which saw him breeze through the early rounds with a 6-1 win over Robert Grundy and then back-to-back 6-3 victories over Italian Michele Turetta and Scotland's Andy Boulton.

That set O'Connor up for a nervy last 16 clash with Chris Landman, in which he had to show his grit to come through 6-5.

In his quarter final with Thibault Tricole, O'Connor rattled off an impressive five legs in a row to come from 3-1 and comfortably make it into the last four with a 6-3 victory.

He was in even better form in his semi-final as he averaged 92.90 as he dispatched Ryan Joyce in an impressive 7-2 win.

That set up the final clash with 'Hollywood' Chris Dobey, which would be a real tit-for-tat battle.

O'Connor gave himself every chance of winning it when he took a 6-5 lead going into the latter stages of the match.

However, Dobey showed his class as he came from behind to win the final three legs in just 43 darts to claim the event.

The pair will be back at it tomorrow for the 34th and final PDC Players Championship event of 2025.
