IRISH darts star Stephen Rosney was a beaten finalist in the Hungarian Classic in Budapest today as he went down to American Jason Brandon in the final.

The Republic of Ireland captain was in superb form all day as he won through seven rounds on the spin to make it to the decider of the World Darts Federation (WDF) ranked event.

However the Offaly county player failed to capitalise on taking an early 2-0 lead in that final, as Brandon came back to beat him 6-3 to lift the trophy.

Earlier, Rosney had defeated Austria's Nick Zwittnigg, Hungarian Peter Keleman, England's Kaya Basal and Dave Ladley, Slovakian Benjamin Pratnemer, and Germany's Paul Krohne to make it into the last four.

The Irishman then threw some superb darts in his semi-final clash with Scotland's Danny Trueman, as he averaged an impressive 93.64 to record a 5-2 victory.

He appeared to be carrying that form into the final against experienced American Brandon, as he opened up a 2-0 lead by winning the first legs in just 34 darts.

However, after Rosney missed a double top to take out a 110 checkout to take a 3-0 lead, Brandon got his first leg on the scoreboard and then rattled off the next three to take control of the match.

The sixth leg proved particularly painful for Rosney after he missed a series of missed doubles that allowed Brandon in to sneak it on a double five and open up a crucial two leg advantage.

At 5-2 down, Rosney rallied to take the eight leg with a superb 14-dart leg, but he was unable to reel in Brandon, who started the next leg with a maximum and went to win the match in just 14 darts.

Meanwhile, Rosney's Republic of Ireland team-mate, Paddy Quinn of Waterford, also enjoyed a good run to the last eight of the competition.

Quinn won six games on the spin to make it to the quarter finals, before he was beaten by the WDF's number one seed, Jimmy van Schie, of the Netherlands.
