Rosney ready to take Lakeside by storm

IRELAND darts captain Stephe Rosney says qualifying for the WDF World Championships at Lakeside is the icing on the cake of a brilliant 18 months for him.

Rosney secured his spot at Lakeside at the world championships qualifiers in Budapest on Sunday, and has credited a growing consistency in his game for his latest success.

The Offaly county captain will kick off his Lakeside campaign with a Sunday afternoon clash with Scotland's Jim McEwan on November 30.

Speaking to Darts In Ireland, he said: "I'm absolutely delighted to have made it to Lakeside and can't wait to enjoy the experience.

"The qualifiers came at the end of a very long week of darts in Budapest and a lot of us were fairly drained by then.

"But I had a chat with my girlfriend before they began on Sunday and she just told me to give it one last big shot and that's what I did.

"I played very well in my first game and just continued on from there and felt good throughout the rest of the qualifiers.

"I have been playing with a lot of consistency over the last 18 months or so and that's why I am doing so well in these competitions.

"I always seem to average in around 85 all the time now and that will keep you in a lot of games."

Rosney admits his first round clash with experienced Scot McEwan won't be easy, but believes all the pressure will be on his opponent.

He said: "Jim has the experience of these big competitions but I'm coming in with nothing to lose so there is no pressure on me.

"If anything there was more pressure on me in the qualifiers than there will be at Lakeside, as there I will be the underdog and that might suit me.

"The first round is quite a short format with it being first to two sets so I'll have to be on my game from the start."

While he says he prefers playing a legs rather than sets format, Rosney said he won't change his preparation for the tournament.

He added: "I do prefer playing o legs but then I have won two INDO events before under the set format so it's not something to worry about.

"I have a lot of competitive games coming up over the next few weeks with the Killarney Darts festival and ADC finals in the UK, so that will be my preparation in the lead up to Lakeside.

"Making it to the world championships has really capped off the year for me and I'm going to try to make the most of it.

"If I came get past that first then who knows where it could take me."
