KILKENNY darts stalwart Benny Grace said his county's INDO Inter Counties shield win was just desserts for a strong showing all weekend for them in Killarney.
The Kilkenny men had been pitted in the co-called group of death alongside Leinster giants Meath, Offaly and Carlow, coming up just short of qualifying from the group stages last Saturday.
It meant they began Sunday in the shield event, and quickly found their form to dispatch of Longford in the last eight, before outclassing Monaghan 7-4 in their semi-final to make the decider against Louth.
The Kilkenny team managed to up it a notch even more in that final, posting their highest team average throughout the tournament to defeat Louth 7-2 and lift the shield trophy.
Benny reckons that playing in such a tough group on the Saturday actually stood to his team when they entered the shield on Sunday.
He told Darts In Ireland: "I think being in such a tough group on the Saturday did help as it meant we were already playing at a high level for the shield on Sunday.
"It was disappointing not to get out of the group but all you're talking about really is a leg or two here or there that could have made the difference.
"The important thing for us was that the team was playing well and we were able to bring that into the shield on Sunday.
"It was great to win that as our players kept up their form all day and deserve great credit."
The Kilkenny men's shield win came just minutes before the Kilkenny Ladies team took to the stage to take on Dublin in the final of the INDO Inter Counties championship.
The Kilkenny team came up just short in that as reigning champions Dublin went back-to-back with an impressive 4-1 win.
But Benny added; "It was great to have our two teams playing in a final on Sunday. It shows that we are progress in Kilkenny."
