Race for top two spots in Player Championships divisions intensifies

THE race for places at the WDF World Masters through the new INDO Players Championships is hotting up following the latest round of games in Dundalk on Friday night.

With the championships split into three divisions based on averages - with the top two from each division getting a spot at the World Masters - this new competition has certainly created a fair bit of interest amongst the players.

And with two rounds now gone, and another three to do by October, it's looking like it will be a tough battle all the way to claim those spots.

In Division A, Mayo man Conor Heneghan remains in top spot, despite being away at the Modus Super Series this weekend, after he won the first Players Championships in Tipperary last month.

A run to the semi-finals in the Fairways Hotel in Dundalk on Friday night now sees Heneghan's fellow Mayo man, Ultan McDyer, move into second place in the Division A table ahead of Waterford's Eric Power in third.

Friday night's beaten finalist, Alan Richards of Dublin, is now in fourth spot, while the man who beat him in the final, Monaghan's Shane McGuirk, moves into fifth place.

However with the likes of Michael Flynn, Dylan Dowling and Jack Caulfield just a further point back, the race for the top two is likely to remain tight in this all the way through.

It's a similar story in Division B, where Event 1 winner, Brian Todd, of Limerick remains out in front after he made it to the semi-finals in Event 2 on Friday night.

With Todd now on 8 points, he is followed in the table by Dublin's Derek Barry and Longford stalwart Andrew Dempsey on 5.

One player who has very much put himself in contention in Division B is Monaghan's Conall McCann after he won Event 2 on Friday night to move onto five points also, with Donegal youngster Jackson Timoney and Friday's beaten finalist, Davy Orr of Limerick, also in the top six.

The situation in Division C appears to be a lot clearer with two players already racing away at the top.

Group leader Chris Menton of Kilkenny has competed in the final of both events so far against second placed Charlie Doherty of Donegal.

While Chris took the honours in Event 1, it was Charlie who gained revenge on Friday night by winning Event 2, meaning both have now opened up a sizeable points lead over the chasing pack.

Chris remains out on top with 11 points, followed by Charlie on 10, with the next best, Paul Ryan, back on 4 points.

There is still plenty to play for, though, with three more events to come before those places at the WDF World Masters in Hungary are secured.
