Butch the latest Irish star to shine at Modus

DONEGAL darts star Adrian 'Butch' Devine's strong run to the semi-finals of the Modus Super Series this week continues the trend of Irish players doing well on their debut there.

Following in the footstep's of Waterford's Dean Finn and Offaly's Ronan McDonagh, Butch showed that he can compete with the best at this level with a brilliant debut performance.

After picking up an impressive nine wins during three days of Group A action, Butch gave himself every chance of making it to finals night as the first time of asking as he qualified for Group B.

With three players to come out of that group, Butch still had to contend with experienced Modus Super Series regulars like Mark Warburton, Sam Spivey, Kevin Burness and former WDF world champion and PDC tour card holder Andy Baetens.

That proved to be no bother for the former Republic of Ireland captain, as Butch picked up the three wins he needed to take a qualifying spot for finals night.

He wasn't finished, there, however, as Butch showed his class once again by taking down Group B winner Warburton with a brilliant 4-1 victory in his opening match on finals night.

The wheels might have come slightly off after that, as defeats to Alex Williams and then to eventual winner Graham Hall in the semi-finals put an end to Butch's Modus adventure.

But not before he'd left his mark on the competition, which may well see him get future call-ups to Modus on the back of it.

As commentator Scott Mitchell pointed out when he predicted Butch would take out a 136 checkout at one stage: "This is the sort of thing this man does. He expects nothing of himself, thinks he's the underdog in every throw, nobody knows who he is. But we know a little more about him than he thinks."
