Rebecca into World Masters semi finals as Quinn and McDonagh fall just short

IRISH darts sensation Rebecca Allen remains on course to win the WDF World Masters after storming through to the semi-finals of the Girls competition in Budapest today.

The Carlow star was in typical top form as she first topped her group and then came through three knockout games to make into the final four on Saturday.

The 16-year-old will now fancy her chances of going all the way after a series of dominant displays today.

Rebecca began her day by topping Group D ahead of fellow Irish player, Brooke Warren, as she won all three of her group games for the loss of just two legs.

She was then joined in the last 16 by Irish Girls international Zoe Burke, as they both won through their last 32 games to advance into the latter stages of the tournament.

While Zoe went down 4-2 to Marie Huber of Germany in her last 16 class, Rebecca had better luck as she overcame Grace Padget of New Zealand to go through to the quarter finals.

With a place in Saturday's finals day at stake, Rebecca held her nerve to come from 3-2 down and defeat England's Macy Gibbons 4-3 in her quarter final to secure her spot in the last four.

Meanwhile, in the men's section, Waterford's Paddy Quinn and Offaly's Ronan McDonagh also came agonisingly close to making it into the final four as both crashed out at the quarter final stage.

Quinn was in excellent form all day as he came through four knockout games on the spin to set up his quarter final clash with England's Cliff Prior.

That game started well for Quinn as he took the opening leg, before Prior put him under pressure by winning four of the next five legs to lead 4-2 going into the closing stages of the match.

Quinn managed to peg it back to 4-3, but it was Prior who prevailed as he took the next leg in 17 darts to advance to the last four.

It was similar agony for McDonagh as he too fell at the final hurdle to American Jason Brandon,

Like Quinn, McDonagh was in imperious form in the early knockout rounds, averaging in the high 90s in his wins over Canada's Nick Smith and Poland's Krzysztof Kciuk.

However experienced American Brandon, who won the Hunagrian Classic on Sunday by beating McDonagh's Offaly team-mate Stephen Rosney in the final,  just had too much for him in their quarter final tussle.

With the game tied at 2-2, Brandon reeled off three legs in a row to defeat McDonagh and advance to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, in the Youths section, Waterford's Jack Caulfield had a good run to the last 16 before losing out 4-3 to Scottish wonderkid Mitchell Lawrie.
