McDyer leads the charge as six Irish players top their World Masters groups

MAYO man Ultan McDwyer was amongst no less than half a dozen Irish players to top their group on the opening day of the WDF World  Masters in Hungary.

McDyer admitted to being relieved to have got through his group in what he described as being a "nervy" day for him in Budapest.

Whatever the nerves, McDyer, who is currently ranked sixth in Ireland, won all his games to finish top of Group BW, ahead of the likes of Canada's Jason Smith and Northern Ireland's Neil Duff.

It was a similar story for current Ireland number one, Dale McCarthy, as he came through Group AH with three wins out of three.

The Kerry man finished top of the group, which also contained Dublin's Sean McKeon, who finished in third place after picking up one win out of his three games.

There was joy also for Offaly's Ronan McDonagh, as he topped his group with three wins out of three and posting an impressive 91.73 average across the day.

Republic of Ireland captain Stephen Rosney, who made it to the final of the Hungarian Classic on Sunday, maintained his goof form as he also won three out of three to top group BB.

The Irish weren't finished there, however, as Louth man Damien Grimes also topped his group with four wins out of four.

He has been joined in the next round by Waterford's Paddy Quinn, who also impressed as he won all four of his games with an 85.49 average.

It all means Ireland will be strongly represented in the knockout stages of the WDF World Master, with all six now hoping they can on into the latter stages of the tournament.
