Shane is star of the day as he remains in Modus contention

SHANE McGuirk was the star performer at the Modus Super Series Champions Week today  as he remains well in contention to qualify for finals night.

The Monaghan man is just two points off the Group A lead with one day left to play to decide who gets the first automatic finals night spot.

McGuirk began his day in scintillating fashion,  averaging an incredible 107.65 as he defeated Group A leader Derek Coulson 4-1.

That win over the Welshman could yet prove crucial in the final shakeup as the pair remain in the top two spots in the group.

The Arrow followed that up with a 4-3 win over Jenson Walker, with a 91.95 average, as he kept in touch with Coulson at the top of the group.

However, McGuirk suffered a setback as he lost his next match in a last leg decider to Mervyn King, before also falling to defeat Scott Campbell to dent his hopes of topping the Group A table.

He composed himself enough to pick up a crucial 4-1 win in his final match over Alec Small, to leave him on 14 points in the table, just two behind Coulson and two ahead of Campbell in third place.

At least two more wins tomorrow should secure McGuirk a top three spot that will place him into Group B at the very least, but he will no doubt still be eyeing the chance of topping Group A outright.
