SHANE McGuirk was the best of the Irish at the PDC Challenge Tour today as he made it as far as the last eight in Event 14.
The WDF world champion won seven games across two events as he picked up £700 in crucial ranking money that should see him move up the Challenge Tour Order of Merit.
He was eventually stopped in his tracks in the quarter final of Challenge Tour 14 in a high class game against England's Jack Tweddel, in which McGuirk averaged just over 102, but was edged out 5-4 by his opponent who won the last two legs in 12 darts.
The Monaghan man had earlier beaten the likes of Richie Burnett, Challenge Tour 13 winner Danny Van Trijp, Scottish veteran John Henderson and fellow Irishman Dylan Dowling to make it to the last eight.
Elsewhere, Cork's John O'Shea - who will be McGuirk's partner for Ireland in the International Pairs at Modus Super Series next week - had to settle for a last 16 spot at PDC Challenge Tour 14.
O'Shea found his best form so far this weekend as he won four games on the trot over Jaikob Selby-Rivas, Andrew Callery, Patrick Dekker and Nathan Care to make it into the latter stages.
However his run was ended in a 5-2 defeat to Darius Labanauskas, despite O'Shea taking an early 2-0 lead in that game.
Action will resume at the Arena MK in Milton Keynes tomorrow for one more PDC Challenge Tour event.
