Ireland are table toppers at Modus International Pairs

The Irish doubles team of John O'Shea and Shane McGuirk have made a great start to their Modus International Pairs competition by topping Group B after the first night of action.

Ireland's duo showed just why they are one of the fancied teams to win the event as they came out on top in three of their four games.

Monaghan man McGuirk got them up and running as he pinned a crucial double five to give them a 4-3 win over Holland in a tightly fought opening contest.

However the Irish pair were beaten 4-1 in their next match by the Welsh duo of Richie Burnett and Kurt Parry, despite averaging just over 90 between them.

They managed to put that defeat behind them in their next match against Germany as they came out impressive 4-1 winners to join their defeated opponents at the top of the table.

A final match against Kenya saw Ireland take the outright lead in the group as O'Shea's expert doubling - in which he hit two double tops in one leg and then a decisive double 5 in another - saw them complete a 4-2 victory.

It mean's Ireland are top of the group on six points and well in contention to take one of the three qualifying spots for finals night with one more round of games to come later today.
