Decent day for Barry at PDC Players Championship as Rock hits nine darter

MEATH'S Keane Barry had a good run to the last 16 at the PDC Players Championship 20 today.

Barry won his first three games on the spin to win his board and advance to an all Irish clash with World Cup winner Josh Rock in the last 16.

He began his day with a 6-4 win over veteran Mervyn King, before disposing of 11th seed Wessel Nijman 6-1 with a clinical display and a 96.26 average.

Barry maintained his form in his board final against German, Ricardo Pietreczko, coming out as a 6-2 winner in that game with a 94.32 average.

However he was no match for a marauding Rock, who had earlier hit a nine darter in  his opening match against Sebastian Bialecki, with the Antrim man coming out on top with a 6-3 win.

Barry will have been pleased to have picked some crucial ranking money along the way today, though, with it being a mixed day for other Irish players.

Limerick's Willie O'Connor bowed out in the first round, losing 6-5 to Luke Woodhouse in a high class contest, while Tipperary's Dylan Slevin suffered a similar fate in his opening match to Mike De Decker.

Tyrone's Mickey Mansell, Carlow's Steve Lennon and Fermanagh man Brendan Dolan all won their opening games, but then bowed out in the last 64.

It was a better day for Derry's Daryl Gurney as he made it to the last eight before losing out to eventual winner Damon Heta, while his world cup winning partner Rock also went out in the quarter finals to Rob Cross.
