DEAN Finn came within a whisker of being the third Irish player into next week's Modus Super Series Champions Week as he lost out in the final to inspired Danny Van Trijp on Saturday night.
The Waterford man was in superb form as he came through his group on finals night and then advanced past the semi-finals and into the final two.
However he missed out on taking the last spot in the Series 12 Champions Week as Dutchman Van Trijp rattled off an incredible series of winning legs, that even included a nine darter, for an unreal 120.24 average.
There was little Finn could do against that in what was an otherwise brilliant week for him.
The Republic of Ireland international had advanced to finals night by finishing runner up in Group C and got his campaign off to a flyer by beating Group A winner Raymond Smith 4-1 in his opening match.
That meant Finn needed just two legs in his second group match against Van Trijp, which he managed to get, meaning he was into the semi-finals despite losing that game 4-2.
Finn, who made it to the semi-finals in his last appearance at Modus, went one better this time as he came from 3-1 down to beat Welshman David Davies 4-3 to advance to the final.
However he was hit by a juggernaut in that decider as Van Trijp started the game with 12 and 13 dart legs, before taking out a stunning nine darter in the third leg.
With Finn stunned, Van Trijp wrapped up the win in the next leg to advance to Champions Week, where two other Irish players, John O'Shea and Shane McGuirk, will be waiting for him.
