Magnificent McDonagh is motoring at Modus

IRISH darts star Ronan McDonagh saved his best until last to put himself into contention to qualify for the Modus Super Series finals night.

The Offaly man averaged a superb 106.74 as he defeated England international Chas Barstow 4-1 in his final Group B game last night to give himself every chance of qualifying.

It means McDonagh is just two points off the top of the table, with one round of games to go tonight, with the top three from the group set to qualify.

However he still has a bit of work to do, with four players still very much in contention for those three spots.

McDonagh will be more than happy to be in the mix, though, after he lost his opening two matches of the night.

Some missed doubles proved costly in his opening match against group leader Brian Raman as McDonagh fell to a 4-2 defeat.

A 4-1 defeat in his next match to Alex Spellman had McDonagh in all sorts of trouble, even if he did show his class in that match by going seven perfect darts into  a nine-dart leg attempt.

And he soon rallied to get his campaign back on track.

He kept his nerve to come through a cracking game against Kurt Parry of Wales, defeating him 4-3 with a 93.82 average in what could yet prove to be his most crucial win of the week.

It kept McDonagh within touching distance of Parry in the Group B table, and he increased his chances significantly with a brilliant performance in his last match against Barstow.

McDonagh will return to Group B action tonight when he will be hoping to qualify for finals night for the third time in succession.
