LEITRIM'S Ray Mulvey has put himself right in contention to make the Republic of Ireland team for the Island Internationals following his superb win in the ranking event at the INDO National Singles weekend in Ballina.

Mulvey was in brilliant form all night as he took some big scalps along the way to secure one of the biggest wins of his career to date.

He kept his nerve in the  final against Ireland captain Stephen Rosney, in which he withstood three maximums from the Offaly man to win 6-3 in a high class game in which both players averaged over 90.

Mulvey also showed tremendous grit in his semi-final against Carlow's Mark Cullen, as he came from 4-1 down to eventually advance 6-4 with a sensational display of finishing.

He had earlier beaten Ireland's World Cup star Gerard McGlynn in the last 16 and then Mayo's Modus International Pairs champion Conor Heneghan in his last eight clash.

It means Mulvey has now moved to 14th in the INDO rankings table, with the top 13 securing their spots on the Ireland team for next year's Island Internationals, with one more ranking event to go today.

It was also a great night for Dublin's Robyn Byrne as she secured the win in the Ladies ranking event.

Byrne has now closed the gap in the INDO rankings table to leader Katie Sheldon by beating her in a brilliant final that went all the way to the last double.

The Ireland World Cup winning captain showed just why she is one of the most feared Ladies players in the game as she topped Group B by winning all three of her games for the loss of just one leg.

She was equally good in the knockout stages as she beat Molly Doherty 3-0 in the last 16, before keeping her nerve to come from 2-1 down to beat Caroline Breen 3-2 in her quarter final.

Byrne then averaged an excellent 75.15 in beating Celine McDonald in her semi-final, before being pushed to a last leg decider in the final against Sheldon, as she eventually came out on top 5-4.

It means Sheldon remains top of the Ladies rankings table, ahead of Byrne in second, with Donegal's Denise Cassidy and Carlow's Rebecca Allen making up the top four.
