TOP Irish ladies players Robyn Byrne and Denise Cassidy have boosted their chances of making it to the PDC World Matchplay in July after a strong showing from both at the Women's Series in Germany this weekend.

Byrne was in excellent form throughout the four events in Hildesheim, making it to the last four in the opening PDC Women's Series of the year on Saturday, before another strong run to the quarter finals in event four today.

It means she sits in 13th places in the World Matchplay order of merit, with the top eight qualifying, but just £250 off a qualification spot with three more rounds of the Women's Series to come between now and July.

After suffering a semi-final defeat to the all-conquering Beau Greave on Saturday, Byrne put in another strong performance today, winning four games on the spin in Women's Series 4 to make the last eight.

She got there with impressive victories over England's Laura Turner, Ella Coburn and Lauren Bloomfield to set up her quarter final clash with Lisa Ashton.

It was Ashton, who beat Byrne on stage at last year's World Matchplay, who came out on top again with a 5-2 win, averaging 78.25 in the process.

Byrne's Republic of Ireland team-mate, Denise Cassidy, is also now in a strong position in the World Matchplay race after she made it to the semi-finals of Women's Series 3 today.

Cassidy was just one leg away from going all the way to the final before she succumbed to Fallon Sherlock in an agonising last leg defeat in that last four clash.

The WDF World Cup winner had taken out some big names on her run to the semi-finals, including victories over Finland's Kirsi Viinikainen, Holland's Noa-Lyn van Leuven and English veteran Trina Gulliver.

She followed that up with another good run to the last 16 in Women's Series 4, after defeating van Leuven for the second time today.

It means Cassidy sits in 12th spot on the World Matchplay table, also just £250 off a qualifying spot.

Both she and Robyn Byrne will have the chance to close the gap on the top eight when the PDC Women's Series returns for another weekend of action in Wigan next month,
