THE time when a small county like Leitrim could be taken for granted at the Inter Counties are well and truly over following their recent heroics in the competition.
Leitrim are one of the seeded men's teams at this year's Inter Counties, following their run to the quarter finals last year.
And Leitrim stalwart Brian Kelly has fired a warning that they are only going to go from strength to strength.
Brian told Darts In Ireland: "I think we are coming into this year's Inter Counties a little stronger than last year but we are still a work in progress.
"We have a lot of younger lads coming along very strongly now, which is great to see, and can only help to make us better overall.
"Hopefully bring one of the seeded teams this year will help us in the draw, but with almost every county getting stronger now anyway it will be tough no matter who we get."
Brian said Leitrim have had plenty of good competitive action behind them over recent months, having made it to the final of the Connaught Cup and then competed at the West Coast Challenge in Limerick last month.
He added: "It's good for the players to get that experience of playing as a county team at several different tournaments.
It's definitely going to bring the younger players on, while also keeping the more experienced players sharp, which will be good for us."
The Leitrim ladies team are also looking in good shape heading to the Inter Counties.
Leitrim has a strong tradition in ladies darts with Irish international legend Olive McIntyre still very much involved with the team.
The ladies team has made it to the quarter finals of the shield over the past two years, and will be hoping to advance further this year.
Brian said: "Our ladies team is getting more competitive all the time and can look forward to a good championships this year."
