Strong Sligo a match for anyone at Inter Counties

A look over recent years at the INDO Inter Counties shows that Sligo are never too far away when it comes to battling with the big boys.

They were the one team to give reigning Inter Counties champions Donegal a major scare in last year's championships, bringing them down to the final two games in a closely fought last 16 clash.

They fell at the same stage to semi-finalists Roscommon the year previous, and Sligo darts secretary Paul Boyle insists they will be right in the mix again this year.

Paul told Darts In Ireland: "We know this Sligo team is capable of beating anyone on our day and we just have to bring that to this championships.

"Our team is strong overall this year and we just need to need to find a bit of consistency and we can be a match for any team."

With trusted competitors like legendary ex Ireland International captain Sean McGowan still amongst their ranks, Paul says Sligo can rely on that bit of experience if games get tight.

He said: "The likes of Sean might not be the player he was a few years ago but he is still a great man to have in your team for a close game as he can pull a big win out at any time."

Sligo is also now benefitting from the growth in youth darts, with the county's youth darts academy attracting big numbers.

Paul said this can only be good for the future of darts in Sligo.

"It's great that we have such interest from the youths now and we will look to build on that for the future."
