Kildare confident of strong Inter Counties showing

IF their recent performance at the Leinster Championships are anything to go by then Kildare will be a team to watch at this year's Inter Counties.

A run to the last four in Leinster saw Kildare take down a highly fancied Offaly side, with them only losing out in the semi-finals to the eventual winners Carlow.

Kildare manager Damian Gleeson said he saw enough from his team to be confident they can take a few scalps in Killarney.

The Kildare men have often slipped into the shield after the groups stages, even going on to win it in 2024, but Damian reckons this could be the year they go far in the main cup competition.

He told Darts In Ireland: "You would have to be confident going into this after seeing how well we played and how our players handled themselves at the Leinster Championships.

"That run to the semi-finals will have given a lot of our players a real boost as it shows we are really not that far off."

Damian said darts is getting stronger in Kildare and they had big numbers at their country trials this year, with a lot of Youth players also now coming through the ranks.

He said: "The numbers we had at the trials were fantastic, with a high of 72 at one of them, which is really strong numbers and shows that we're going in the right direction.

"We have young lads coming through now too at just 16 to 18 years of age and they are giving our older, more experienced players as good as they're getting.

"So we seem to have a nice mix of established players and new players coming through. I really think Kildare could be a dark horse this year."
